"Sound is actually a very fragile instrument."

He Hui has a clear understanding of her own voice, which is why many fans were surprised by her choice of music for this concert - Wagner's operas are not something He Hui has tried much before. He Hui is usually positioned as a "lyric dramatic soprano who sings Italian opera". Her singing voice is round and bright, her performance is delicate, and her works are mainly Puccini, Verdi and realist operas.

"The voice is actually a very fragile 'instrument,' talking too much or distracting too much to achieve a particularly perfect state." Hehui said.
Wagner's operas are known to be difficult to sing, and the volume and difficulty of the works are demanding on the singer's skills and even her body type. "Once the voice is stretched, it's hard to go back. He Hui said, "But with the adjustment of technique, hormonal secretion and other physical changes, I feel that the thickness and strength of my voice has reached a stage where I can try Wagnerian opera." After the two concerts at the NCPA, He Hui is rushing to Shanghai to attend rehearsals for Wagner's opera "The Wandering Dutchman.
"Lately, I've been singing German works." He Hui's preparations began long ago, and she and her vocal teacher and artistic director have been searching every day for a way to sing that suits her. German has many consonants, which are clearly different from Italian, "How to bite easily without destroying the singing cavity is something that is difficult to grasp and must be paid attention to."
Buried in her German studies, He Hui was always the same serious and persistent Shaanxi girl. She vividly remembers the performance of Tosca at the Royal Opera House in Parma, Italy, in 2002, which was her debut on the European stage. "I didn't speak Italian very well at that time, and I learned the lyrics word by word by looking them up in the dictionary."
In Italy, the home of opera, audiences are picky about every detail. Before going on stage, the pressure was on to the limit. "What should I do?" Huey was so nervous that she rubbed her hands together. Suddenly, she thought of Maria Callas, the singer she admired most. She had seen many videos of Callas, and the way Callas raised her hand was like a key that opened the door to the innermost part of the character - "Mario! Mario!" and Hui called out the first chant of "Tosca" and just like that she walked on stage.
What an unforgettable night it was. "For the first time, I felt the cheers of the audience and the recognition and success I received in a foreign country." After walking off the stage, the staff moving props also applauded to their hearts' content for Hehui's wonderful performance.
Taking the two concerts that just ended as a starting point, He Hui will begin a year-long series of performances as an artist-in-residence at the NCPA. Her story with the city of Beijing will have many more exciting chapters to come.
